God’s goals are more significant than you can imagine
Eph 3:20 Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us,
God can and will do more than we can ask and pray for
First of all, we have to remind ourselves who this promise, this glorious promise, is intended for. The words “according to the power at work within us” points to the objects or recipients of this wonderful promise. The “us” are the recipients and refer to those in the church, those who are in Christ. So the text tells us emphatically that God can do far more abundantly what we can ask or think. In another translation, the NKJV says, “He is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all we can ask or imagine” the point stays the same. God cannot only match our godly, Christ-exalting prayers; God can do abundantly more than what we ask for or imagine.
Let’s recap what Paul asked for in prayer recorded in Ephesians,
• Illumination of the Holy Spirit to know and experience:
• The hope of his calling
• The riches of his inheritance in the saints
• The exceeding greatness of his power that is at work within us
• Strength so that Christ may dwell within us
• To know the love of Christ that surpassed knowledge
• To be filled with the fulness of God
Wow! Not only can God give us all of the above but give us more! I have to ask, what more could we possibly dream of than the fulness of God?
I, for one pray for sinless perfection, which all saints will receive in heaven, but is there more? As the Scriptures say, “eye has not seen, and ear has not heard what God has prepared for those who love Him” (1 Corinthians 2) . We cannot imagine what is stored up for believers in eternity. It has not entered the minds of humans what God will give us. My guess is greater and greater conformity to the image of Christ. What that would be we would only know in bodies that are glorified as Jesus has.
Let’s not speculate too much; let us fix our eyes on the promise of God and trust that God will do what He says. He will give us more than we can ask or imagine, and all those things that God has prepared for those who love Him with the love He has given us would be perfect, holy and glorious. Amen
