Jesus heals
14 And when Jesus entered Peter’s house, he saw his mother-in-law lying sick with a fever.
15 He touched her hand, and the fever left her, and she rose and began to serve him.
16 That evening they brought to him many who were oppressed by demons, and he cast out the spirits with a word and healed all who were sick.
In the gospel of Luke where the same story is told, (See Luke 4:38, 39), it states
that Peter’s mother in law, was ill with high fever. She must have been very ill and it states that they, probably Peter and the disciples, knowing this, appealed to Jesus to come and heal her.
We read, Jesus entered Peter’s house and touched her hand, and the fever left her. Again, we see the power and compassion of Christ displayed. He has power over fever. He has power over every sickness. He has only to touch someone to heal them. We see this repeatedly in the gospels. In verse 16, in our text we read, that when evening came “He healed ALL who were sick”. Such was the man Jesus Christ. Everyone who came to Him, He healed. He demonstrated his absolute authority over sickness, the effect of sin. Sickness is part of God’s curse. People get cancer, the corona virus, the flu, malaria, tuberculosis, diabetes, and so many other sicknesses, because of Adam’s fall in the Garden of Eden. But Jesus came into this world to reverse the effects of the fall, to show His power over the effects of the fall. Jesus has power over all kinds of diseases. There was not a sickness, not a disease too hard for Him to handle. He had power and still has power over all sicknesses and diseases. But again, we have to say, what we said before, that that time was different than now. Jesus healed all sickness then to prove to all that He was God and the Messiah. If we believe He is the Messiah now, He doesn’t have to prove it to us now by healing every sickness we may have. We have the Bible, and if you have saving faith, proof is not needed. That is why we see in the New Testament God’s people got sick whilst they were in the Kingdom of God, even though Paul had the gift of healing. (See Paul in Galatians 4:13; Epaphroditus in Philippians 2:25-27; Timothy in 1 Timothy 5:23; Trophimus in 2 Tim 4:20). The effects of the fall have not yet been eradicated completely. As William Hendrikson says, “we still die!”
